How much does it cost to refinish my hardwood floors?
Answer:
A whole lot less than it should.
Ok, that’s not the answer you are looking for, read on. The question should be how much does a new hardwood floor cost. Google says that labor to install a new wood floor is
$3-$10
per square foot. New wood flooring costs
$3-$8
per square foot.
Totaling
$6-$18
per square foot.
That doesn’t include. New baseboards or base-shoe. It does not include demo and prep; demo could be
$2-$5
per square foot. If your new floor needs to be glued down that could be another $2 per square foot.
Totaling $10-$23
So a new wood floor could cost more or less than
$23
a square foot. That’s for a prefinished, out of the box, off the shelf wood floor.
When you have your wood floors refinished, you are getting a custom on-sight finished floor.
Better than anything you can buy off the shelf.
You get to pick the color. You get to pick the sheen. You end up with a table-top smooth floor. Unless you want it hand scraped and distressed. Yes, we can do that also.
We sand the floor with 6-8 grades of sandpaper. It may sound like a lot, but we are taking it off paper layer by paper layer. You don’t want to sand off more wood than is necessary, but you also have to sand out all of the scratches and imperfections. We hand scrape all of the nooks and corners where our machines don’t get. We buff the floor and get it tabletop smooth.
Once the floor is tabletop smooth, we wash the floor with water mixed with denatured alcohol. We let that dry. That process opens the pores/grain of the wood so that the stain can penetrate.
Once the water has dried, we wipe on the stain. Any color and we can make custom colors. We let the stain set for a couple of minutes and then we wipe it off.
Once the stain has dried, we apply 3 coats of commercial grade polyurethane. We do a very fine sanding in between each coat of polyurethane to ensure a baby butt smooth wood floor.
The cost for that is only
$5.25
a square foot.
If you do not want a stain, and like me you love the natural color of the wood, we apply 3 coats of commercial grade polyurethane. Sanding in between each coat to ensure a baby butt smooth wood floor.
The cost for natural (no stain) is only
$5.00
Parquet flooring, hand distressed flooring you want sanded smooth and prefinished flooring with aluminum oxide finish is an additional
$0.50-$0.75
per square foot.
So for a fraction of the cost you get a new custom hardwood floor, in a fraction of the time.
Yes, you can find it cheaper. In fact, you can find almost every and anything cheaper. A cheaper car, a cheaper restaurant, a cheaper house, etc.
That’s our price because we only use high quality products. We don’t cut corners. We have been doing this process on many hardwood floors and we train our team very well. They are all GREAT and we pay them for it.
