Hardwood Flooring Designed to Feel Like Home

Hardwood flooring has a presence. It anchors a room. It reflects light. It carries footsteps, conversations, holidays, and quiet mornings. At Grades Hardwoods, we understand that your floors are not just part of your house — they’re part of your story.

As a trusted hardwood flooring contractor serving Raleigh, Cary, and Apex, our mission is simple: deliver craftsmanship that feels authentic, lasts for generations, and enhances the natural beauty of your home.

Whether you’re restoring older hardwood floors or investing in a brand-new installation, we approach every project with precision, patience, and pride.

Expert Hardwood Sanding and Refinishing

Many homeowners are surprised to learn that their existing hardwood floors can look brand new again with professional hardwood sanding and refinishing. Over time, everyday living leaves its mark — scratches, dullness, worn traffic patterns, fading from sunlight. But beneath that wear is solid wood waiting to be restored.

Our hardwood sanding and refinishing process is detailed and methodical. We carefully remove surface wear while preserving the integrity of the wood. Every pass is intentional. Every edge is finished cleanly. The result is a smooth, level surface ready to be transformed.

Where we truly stand apart is in our finishing philosophy.

Rather than defaulting to heavy, plastic-looking coatings, we specialize in natural oil finishes that penetrate the wood fibers. This allows the wood to breathe, retain its texture, and develop a rich, matte elegance that feels warm underfoot.

Natural oil finishes enhance the grain rather than masking it. They create depth without shine. They age gracefully instead of peeling or chipping. For homeowners in Raleigh, Cary, and Apex who value timeless design and authenticity, this approach offers both beauty and durability.

Refinishing isn’t just about making floors look new — it’s about revealing their true character.

Hardwood Installation with Precision and Care

When it comes to new hardwood installation, details matter.

Subfloor preparation. Layout planning. Board selection. Seam transitions. Stair integration. These elements determine whether a floor simply “looks installed” or feels seamlessly crafted into the home.

As a family-owned hardwood flooring contractor, we take a hands-on approach from start to finish. We don’t rush projects or stack schedules. We plan carefully, communicate clearly, and execute with intention.

For homeowners remodeling in Raleigh, upgrading kitchens in Cary, or building custom homes in Apex, we work closely with you (and your builder, if applicable) to ensure your hardwood flooring complements your space beautifully.

From traditional oak to character-grade planks, every installation is tailored to your design goals and lifestyle. We focus on clean lines, tight seams, and balanced transitions from room to room.

And when stairs are involved, we treat them with the same attention to detail.

Custom Stair Installation and Refinishing

Stairs are one of the most visible architectural elements in a home. They connect levels, draw the eye, and often serve as a central design feature.

Unfortunately, they’re also where shortcuts are most noticeable.

We provide custom stair installation and refinishing that blends seamlessly with your hardwood flooring. From treads and risers to nosings and landings, we ensure transitions are clean and cohesive.

Whether matching newly installed floors or refinishing existing stairs to complement your space, we take extra care in measurement, alignment, and finish application. The goal is unity — your stairs should feel like an extension of your flooring, not an afterthought.

The Beauty of Natural Oil Finishes

Natural oil finishes are more than a product choice — they’re a philosophy.

Traditional polyurethane sits on top of the wood, forming a hard shell that can appear glossy or artificial. While protective, it can mask the grain and create a plastic-like surface.

Natural oil finishes, by contrast, penetrate into the wood fibers. They nourish and strengthen from within. The result is a finish that feels organic, breathable, and refined.

Homeowners throughout Raleigh, Cary, and Apex are increasingly drawn to this understated look. It aligns beautifully with modern, transitional, and European-inspired interiors. The matte sheen enhances light without glare. The texture remains authentic. And maintenance is straightforward, allowing for spot repairs rather than full refinishing in many cases.

Most importantly, natural oil finishes allow hardwood to age beautifully. Instead of deteriorating unevenly, the floor develops character over time — becoming more personal with each year.

For families who value sustainability, warmth, and long-term durability, this finish offers a compelling alternative.

A Process Built on Communication and Trust

Inviting a contractor into your home requires trust.

That’s why we prioritize clear communication from the very first consultation. We walk you through your options, explain the process in detail, and answer your questions honestly. No pressure. No rushed decisions.

Before work begins, we outline timelines and expectations. During the project, we maintain a clean and organized workspace. After completion, we ensure you understand care and maintenance for your hardwood floors, especially when using natural oil finishes.

As a family-owned business serving the Raleigh, Cary, and Apex communities, our reputation matters deeply to us. We rely on referrals, relationships, and the satisfaction of homeowners who feel confident recommending us to friends and neighbors.

Your home isn’t just another project — it’s someone’s gathering place, someone’s comfort zone, someone’s investment. We respect that.

Serving Raleigh, Cary, and Apex

The Triangle area is growing quickly, but craftsmanship should never feel rushed or impersonal.

From historic homes in Raleigh to updated residences in Cary and custom builds in Apex, we’ve had the privilege of working in a wide range of homes and styles. Each one is unique. Each deserves thoughtful attention.

Our understanding of local homes — including common wood species, architectural styles, and renovation trends — allows us to make recommendations that align with both design and durability.

We aren’t a national chain. We aren’t a volume-driven franchise. We’re a local hardwood flooring contractor committed to serving our community with integrity.

Floors That Last for Generations

Hardwood flooring is one of the few features in a home that can truly span generations when properly cared for. Unlike other flooring materials that require replacement every decade, solid hardwood can be refinished, restored, and renewed.

When installed correctly and finished thoughtfully, it becomes an investment in both beauty and longevity.

At Grades Hardwoods, our goal is to create floors that your family will enjoy for decades — floors that feel warm in winter mornings, steady under busy footsteps, and elegant during special occasions.

We combine traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. We focus on quality over quantity. And we never lose sight of the fact that this is your home.

Let’s Create Something Beautiful Together

If your hardwood floors are worn and ready for restoration, or if you’re planning a new installation in Raleigh, Cary, or Apex, we’d love to talk with you.

From hardwood sanding and refinishing to custom installation, stair work, and natural oil finishes, we’re here to guide you through the process with clarity and care.

"Uli was excellent to work with, always quick to respond, fair on pricing and showed up on time! We had hardwood floors that in a short four year span had taken a beating from everyone being home over the pandemic and our kids and dogs being home from college. We had dull floors with some surface scratches as well as some deep groove scratches. not only was Uli able to make those surface scratches disappear he color corrected the deeper groves and they are no longer noticeable! I highly recommend Uli and Grades Hardwoods to make your hardwoods look brand new again! I could not be happier with the results - thank you Uli!"

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know if my hardwood floors can be refinished?

Most solid hardwood floors can be professionally sanded and refinished multiple times, depending on their thickness and current condition. If your floors have surface scratches, dullness, minor stains, or worn traffic areas, hardwood sanding and refinishing is often the best solution.

During your consultation, we assess the wood species, previous finish, and wear level to determine whether refinishing is the right option. Many homeowners in Raleigh, Cary, and Apex are surprised to learn their existing floors can be beautifully restored instead of replaced.

  • What is the difference between natural oil finishes and polyurethane?

Polyurethane sits on top of the wood and forms a surface film, often creating a shinier, plastic-like appearance. Natural oil finishes penetrate into the wood fibers, enhancing the grain and maintaining the wood’s organic texture.

    Natural oil finishes offer:

    • A warm, matte appearance
    • Easier spot maintenance
    • A breathable, authentic feel
    • A finish that ages gracefully

For homeowners seeking a refined, natural look in Raleigh, Cary, and Apex homes, natural oil finishes provide a timeless alternative to traditional coatings.

  • How long does hardwood sanding and refinishing take?

Most hardwood sanding and refinishing projects take between 3–5 days, depending on square footage, repairs needed, and chosen finish. Natural oil finishes have their own curing timeline, which we explain clearly before your project begins.

We provide a detailed schedule during your consultation so you know exactly what to expect from start to finish.

  • Do you install new hardwood flooring?

Yes. We provide professional hardwood installation throughout Raleigh, Cary, and Apex. Whether you’re replacing outdated flooring, remodeling your kitchen, or building a custom home, we handle subfloor preparation, layout planning, board installation, and finishing with precision and care.

We also ensure seamless transitions between rooms and existing surfaces for a cohesive, finished look.

  • Can you refinish or install hardwood on stairs?

Absolutely. Stairs require detailed craftsmanship and precise measurement. We provide both stair refinishing and custom stair installation to match your hardwood flooring. Treads, risers, nosings, and landings are all carefully finished to create a cohesive design throughout your home.

  • Are natural oil finishes durable for families with kids or pets?

Yes — when properly maintained, natural oil finishes are highly durable and practical for active households. One of their biggest advantages is repairability. Instead of sanding the entire floor for minor damage, spot maintenance is often possible.

We provide clear care instructions so your floors remain beautiful for years to come.

  • How do I maintain hardwood floors with a natural oil finish?

Maintenance is straightforward. Regular sweeping or vacuuming prevents grit buildup, and periodic cleaning with recommended products keeps the surface nourished. Unlike traditional film finishes, natural oil floors benefit from occasional maintenance coats in high-traffic areas rather than full refinishing.

We walk every homeowner through a customized maintenance plan at project completion.

  • Why choose a family-owned hardwood flooring contractor?

Working with a family-owned hardwood flooring contractor means direct communication, personal accountability, and attention to detail. At Grades Hardwoods, we rely on reputation, referrals, and long-term relationships in the Raleigh, Cary, and Apex communities.

We don’t rush projects or cut corners. We treat your home with the same care we would our own.

Prefinished or Unfinished Hardwood Flooring

Which is better?

From an aesthetic perspective, there is no comparison to the beauty and warmth of unfinished hardwood flooring that is sanded and finished on site by an expert flooring craftsman. However, prefinished flooring is a much faster process, you can walk on it right after it is installed. It’s done!

Unfinished new or refinished hardwood flooring as an investment in your home, you can be assured that it is going to be there for a long time. The hardwood floor that you choose is something that you will see, walk on, and appreciate every day, and for those reasons, we believe that the extra days required for on-site sanding and finishing is of minimal inconvenience when compared with the many years that you will enjoy your new or refinished hardwood floors.

What are the main differences between the two?

  • Prefinished hardwood flooring has been finished – sanded, stained, and coated with polyurethane – in a factory. It only needs to be installed, which means it’s cut and nail it to the subfloor. Your new floor is done. This type of flooring is factory-finished. Each board has been finished individually with sprayed-on coats of polyurethane. The boards are then oven baked with aluminum oxide to create an extremely hard acrylic finish. Because each board is finished individually, this creates a beveled edge along each side of the board. When prefinished hardwood flooring is installed, there will be a micro-bevel or groove in between each board. This creates a floor that is not totally flat, and each board will have a visible line in between it.

  • Unfinished flooring is raw hardwood that must first be installed and then sanded and refinished on site. Unfinished flooring is raw wood with no beveled edges. When unfinished hardwood flooring is sanded and finished on site, there are no lines in between the boards, and you will get a perfectly flat, smooth floor.

Advantages to Prefinished Flooring
  • Time: Prefinished flooring is a faster process. Once prefinished flooring is installed, you can walk on it and put furniture on it immediately. With an unfinished hardwood floor, the sanding process may take several days and then you will have to wait another several days to put furniture back on the floor.

  • Less Mess: Prefinished flooring is less messy than an unfinished floor that will need to go through a sanding process. Sanding does create dust during the actual sanding process, though our dustless system definitely cuts down on the mess.

  • No Smell: With prefinished flooring, there are no chemical smells because there are no chemicals being applied. The flooring has already treated in the factory where it was made. It is true that the smell from refinishing and applying an oil based polyurethane is intense, difficult to deal with, and not healthy to inhale; however, with the new green products that we recommend and use, our clients do not have to deal with the harsh smell and/or chemicals of an oil based poly. For applications of oil based polyurethane, we insist that our clients be out of the house. For most residential homes, we use Bona water based polyurethanes which have very low VOCs, are environmentally friendly, and have almost no smell at all. We also recommend and frequently use Rubio oils, which have NO VOCs and no smell.

  • Cost: Prefinished flooring usually costs less overall than unfinished flooring. Though prefinished flooring may cost more for the actual material, with the reduced labor costs of only an installation, prefinished flooring usually ends up being less expensive than unfinished hardwood flooring that is installed and then sanded and finished on site.

Advantages of Unfinished Flooring
  • Appearance: Unfinished flooring looks like real wood. It is our opinion that prefinished flooring looks plastic-y and factory-made, with a less noticeable grain pattern making it appear less warm. Unfinished hardwood that has been finished on site by an expert hardwood flooring professional looks like a work of art. There is nothing that compares to the natural warmth and beauty of a hardwood floor that has been sanded and treated by a real craftsman.

  • Finish Options: The creative possibilities with unfinished floors are nearly unlimited. From the countless different species of wood available, to innumerable stain colors, to the many different finish options, the sky is the limit with unfinished floors. We also do all of the new finish options including hardwax oils like Rubio Monocoat. We can create a blue or even a green floor!

  • Matching existing flooring in the home:  If you have existing hardwood flooring in the home that you want to match, adding unfinished wood flooring is the way to go. You will be able to match the species of wood, and a professional hardwood floor refinisher can play with stains and colors on the unfinished wood to match the existing floor.

  • Uniform stain color:  Prefinished flooring that is stained a dark color will only be stained on the face of the board. Because of the beveled edge, when a darkly stained prefinished floor is installed, sometimes you can see the underside or lighter portion of the wood along the edges when you look at the floor from far away. When unfinished hardwood is installed and finished on site, the wood is smooth and uniform, and stain is applied to all visible areas.

  • Cleaning:  The beveled edges of a prefinished floor also create a trap for additional dirt, dust, and grime which can be more difficult to clean than a floor that has been finished on site and is totally flat.

  • Repairs: If a hardwood floor that has been finished on site gets scratched, it can be spot repaired by taping off boards and sanding those individual boards down to raw wood and then refinishing them. If prefinished flooring becomes scratched, a whole section of the floor may need to be replaced, or the entire floor may need to be sanded in order to correct the problem.

Over time, both prefinished and unfinished flooring will get some surface scratches from normal wear and tear. Unfinished flooring that has been treated with a water based or an oil based polyurethane can be buffed and re-coated every few years to revitalize the top coat of poly and remove surface scratches. We highly recommend you maintained your hardwood floors by doing this process every couple of years, homeowners will never need a complete sanding! This buff and coat procedure is not an option for prefinished flooring. Prefinished flooring can be sanded down to raw wood, but due to the high number of polyurethane coats applied in the factory, the wood must be sanded down deeper into the material than a hardwood floor that was sanded and treated on site. This means that a prefinished floor cannot be sanded as many times as an unfinished floor as it will more quickly become too thin to re-sand. And with prefinished flooring, the beveled edge will be decreased with sanding, but it will never go away completely.

We refinish both prefinished and unfinished flooring, feel free to call us for advice!
